I Tried 6 Different Knee Braces and Sleeves for Skiing. Only One Got Me Through a Full Day.

Let me save you the time and money I wasted.

Over the last four seasons I bought a $189 hinged brace, a $25 neoprene sleeve from the drugstore, rolls of kinesiology tape, a $240 boot fitting with custom footbeds and a "pro" compression sleeve from a big sports brand. Plus more ibuprofen than I'd like to admit.

Five failures. One winner.

Warning: read this BEFORE you buy another brace that ends up at the bottom of your ski bag.

1. I skied until the lifts closed, and my knee held up

Skiing until the lifts close

By 1 p.m. I used to be done. My knee would start to ache on the long blues, and I'd spend the afternoon in the lodge watching Linda ski without me.

With this sleeve? I took the last chair up. Then I skied down with her.

2. My knee finally felt steady on the steep runs

I used to freeze at the top of every steep pitch. One bad turn and that loose, wobbly feeling in my knee came right back.

The side stabilizers keep my knee in line when I carve. For the first time in years I'm skiing the runs instead of surviving them.

3. I could adjust it in seconds, even with my gloves on

This is what really sold me. Every sleeve I owned was too loose by lunch or too tight on the first run.

This one has a small dial on the side. A couple of clicks and the compression is exactly where I want it, even with my gloves on. No straps, no velcro, no fiddling in a cold boot room.

4. Less ache in the evening, and the next morning

I thought the ache after skiing just came with being 58. Ice pack on the couch, stiff on the stairs the next morning.

Now I wake up and want to go again. Day three of the trip feels like day one, and I hadn't had that in a long time.

5. Skiers rate it 4.8 out of 5

And it's not just me. Theravyn says the sleeve has helped over 20,000 knees, and the reviews read like my own story.

Skiers who had almost given up. Couples who ski together again. People who tried the expensive braces first.

If your knee is the reason you leave the slopes early, read a few.

6. It stayed exactly where I put it

Every neoprene sleeve I bought had slid down to my shin by the second run. I'd be tugging at it through my ski pants on the lift.

The silicone grip inside keeps this one where I put it in the morning. Moguls, a fall, the walk back to the car. It doesn't move.

7. Slim enough to wear under my ski pants

That hinged brace felt great in the store. On the mountain it was a different story. It was bulky, it rubbed, and my ski pants barely fit over it.

This sleeve is thin and low-profile. Once my pants are on, I forget it's there.

8. No more pressure on my kneecap

Some sleeves squeeze right on the kneecap. After an hour, that hurts more than it helps.

This one has a gel pad around the kneecap that spreads the pressure out. It feels supportive without pressing on the one spot that's already sore.

9. I wear it off the slopes too

I bought it for skiing, but it hasn't stayed in my ski bag.

I wear it on walks with the dog, gardening on the weekend and on the long drive up to the mountains. Anywhere my knee used to remind me it was there.

10. I finally found what works

I spent hundreds of dollars on braces, tape and sleeves that didn't fix my problem. This one did.

And if it doesn't work for you, you have 90 days to send it back for a refund. The only real risk is another season of leaving the slopes early.

The SkiFit Knee Sleeve is a support sleeve, not a medical device. It does not prevent or treat serious injuries such as ligament tears, fractures or dislocations, and it won't protect you in a bad fall or crash. If you have a serious knee injury or are recovering from surgery, talk to your doctor or physio before using it.
